Pressbox (Press Release) - A Kent grandmother’s painstaking research into the world of law has paid off with her debut novel charting inside the top ten.
Former government advisor Clare Baldock from the village of Loose near Maidstone spent weeks revising the legal system ahead of writing Out of Court.
The 69-year-old, who was also a business manager at large secondary school for more than a decade, has pieced together a stunning thriller.
Based on her own short story, Clare’s first full-length novel is a high octane crime story with plenty of love interest.
Clare said: “Out of Court is a tale of murder, suspense and emotional entanglement.
“I wrote a short story called ‘A Lawful Weekend’ and a dear friend, who is also a writer, said I should make it the start of a novel.
“That was more years and rewrites ago than I care to remember.
“A lot of legal and police procedural research was required to turn the short story into a convincing novel, but it was worth it.”
Out of Court tells the intriguing story of barrister Olivia Bailey who is forced into a clandestine out of court alliance with her adversary, the highly successful Michael Gordon-Jones QC, after a major fraud trial is abandoned.
As Olivia’s parents become embroiled in the curious case more and more revelations come to light, with an unlikely suspect being identified.
For Olivia, getting to the bottom of the money-laundering syndicate is one thing, resisting the growing attraction for Michael is another.
Clare, who has three married offspring and seven grandchildren, lives with her husband Neil and has only just allowed her family to read her finished novel, despite it receiving a five-star reader review on its release by PublishNation and also reaching number nine in the Amazon’s Crime charts.
Clare added: “I paid for a professional edit for Out of Court and I followed most of the advice and did a major rewrite.
“Other than my close writer friend Lyz who helps with the editing and proof reading, I didn’t show Out of Court to anyone else before it was published.
“My family have yet to finish the final book.”
