Pressbox (Press Release) - A great-grandmother from Lancashire has produced her own tale of the unexpected by reaching the top of the charts with her very first collection of creepy short stories.
Stella Worden’s debut, Strange Stories of Frightful Forebodings and Phantoms, has also earned five-star reader reviews since its publication.
The 70-year-old from Preston, who has nine great-grandchildren, is thrilled with the response she’s had since going to print.
Stella said: “The feedback I received from those who’ve read the book has been overwhelmingly positive.
“I write when I’m in the mood by just scribbling things down when I have a moment and that often leads to bigger and better things.
“I’ve written a lot of stories on and off throughout the years and last year it occurred to me, after attending an authors’ writing group, that I’d better get cracking if I wanted to do anything with them.”
Strange Stories of Frightful Forebodings and Phantoms is a collection of 25 wonderfully diverse and imaginative short stories.
As well as a few ghosts, a monster, a witch, and even the devil, Stella introduces readers to out-of-body experiences and gifted predictors.
And almost all of the captivating tales will keep everyone guessing until the end.
Set in locations from her own back yard in Preston to the mysterious sands of Egypt, and everywhere in between, Strange Stories of Frightful Forebodings and Phantoms is packed with adventure and unexpected twists.
Stella, who is part of ScRibble writing group in Preston, believes the appeal of Strange Stories of Frightful Forebodings and Phantoms is down to the realism of her central characters.
She explained: “The main characters of the stories are all just ordinary people going about their normal daily lives.
“You could describe Strange Stories of Frightful Forebodings and Phantoms as magic realism for adults.
“I didn’t set out with a plan, it was more a case of the short stories coming together and the wanting to put them into book form part just sort of grew on me.”
Stella spent her working life in retail and office administration.
Prior to collecting her short stories for Strange Stories of Frightful Forebodings and Phantoms she graduated in Ceramics from the University of Central Lancashire.
Although Stella has no plans at present to publish a second anthology, she has continued to write her wonderful short stories.
