Pressbox (Press Release) - A retired headteacher from South Gloucestershire has picked up the pen in a bid to impress his 13-year-old granddaughter.
David Beeley has just published his first novel, Secrets, Lies and Rhubarb Pies, to critical acclaim and a string of five-star reviews.
The 72-year-old’s debut has been described by critics as ‘a really good read’, having ‘a cast of wonderful characters’, and being ‘well written’.
David admits the inspiration for writing his first novel came from one of his three granddaughters.
He explained: “My 13-year-old granddaughter, Willow, is an outstanding writer, and I was jealous of her ability so I thought that I should try to publish a book.
“Secrets, Lies and Rhubarb Pies is set on a Derbyshire allotments site.
“The main themes of the story are hope, redemption and deep everlasting love, while it is also full of conflicts, secrets and lies.
“Issues are resolved in a surprising way – and love is found and lost.”
Secrets, Lies and Rhubarb Pies follows the fortunes of recently widowed William Mullin and his mates down the allotments.
As their gardening haven comes under threat from a housing developer, the green-fingered plot holders must unite to stop the bulldozers.
David’s debut is a humorous and deeply moving story which sparkles with masterful imagery and believable characters.
The father of two, who has been married to Eve for 50 years, believes Secrets, Lies and Rhubarb Pies is a book that will appeal to everyone.
He added: “Wath Mill Allotments in the Derbyshire town of Newhill are under threat from a housing development.
“Plot holders must come together, but each have their own dark secrets, conflicts and fears protected by lies.
“It is a year of hope, redemption, and deep everlasting love.
“It is a year of a birth, marriage, two deaths, treasure and rhubarb pies.
“And William Mullins, the recently widowed elder statesman must use all his skills, experience, and gentle humour to resolve issues.
“ However, the arrival of William’s long term secret love, offers complications of the best and worst kind.”
Although David never intended his stand alone novel to be part of a series, encouraged by the reception Secrets, Lies and Rhubarb Pies has received, he has started work on a sequel.
