Retired Yorkshire taxman’s festive cheer book

Added: (Thu Dec 01 2022)

Pressbox (Press Release) - A retired tax man from North Yorkshire is hoping to bring back the true meaning of Christmas with his new novella.
Patrick Mitchell worked with HM Customs and Excise for more than 30 years up to his early retirement in 1996.
The father of two from Filey, who lists his favourite authors as Robert Harris, Boris Pasternac and John Cornwell, has now put his love of literature to good use with the release of Melchior’s Story.
The retelling of Jesus’s birth has already gathered positive feedback from reviewers, and now Patrick hopes the story will encourage others to look beyond the commercial Christmas we mostly know today.
He explained: “I got the idea for writing Melchior’s Story when I was thinking about Christmas.
“Melchior’s Story is a version of the classic Christmas story about the journey of the Three Kings to Bethlehem and seeing the child Jesus.
“We know the story, but what were the thoughts and experiences of these eastern travellers at such a momentous time in their lives?
“The message of the book is a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas and one of the greatest events in human history.”
Children across much of the western world continue to be taught the story of Jesus’s birth in a Bethlehem manger.
And the journey of the three kings following a bright star remains a vital part of the nativity story.
But many, including Patrick, feel the symbolism and deeper meaning of the origins of Christmas are gradually being lost.
He hopes Melchior’s Story will provide food for thought.
Patrick added: “This short book tells the story of Melchior, one of the kings, as he reminisces in old age and retells what happened to him and his two royal friends, Caspar and Balthasar.
“Christmas is a very busy and enjoyable time, but it is worth finding a period of quiet in this hectic period to reflect on the true meaning of this wonderful season.
“Whether religious or secular, old or young, this charming story will give you peace and pleasure.”
Following the successful release of Melchior’s Story, Patrick is considering retelling other Christmas Biblical stories from the perspective of the protagonists, notably the shepherds, Joseph and Mary.
