We all know that a picture can convey a thousand words. But what if we told you that each of those thousand words could have its own color? Not only those, but every word ever uttered could have its own customized color.
By the way, even our names can be "translated" into a color. And our thoughts. And the city where we live. And even the verse of a song we just hummed during our coffee break.
In total, over 16 million colors, of which the human eye can distinguish around 10 million, make up the literal colorful vocabulary that anyone can access and use thanks to Rainbow Shifter, the first app developed by the Romanian-based company of the same name. Created by Horațiu Tănescu, a software enthusiast from Oradea, the app transforms words into unique colors and allows users to explore the vast universe of colors.

Rainbow Shifter – the app that gives color to words
In its disarming simplicity, Rainbow Shifter transforms any word into unique, personalized colors. On your phone, laptop, or PC, you can type anything - from your name or favorite food to a poem or your favorite quote - and watch as your screen instantly transforms thanks to this new color creator. You can discover the color of the city you live in, the name of your girlfriend/boyfriend or your favorite quote.
It might seem like a game, but it's a creative one that allows you to explore this vast universe of colors and learn intriguing details about them. Curious minds will discover, for instance, the "recipe" for their personalized color through information displayed about HEX, RGB, CMYK, HSL, HVB, and HSV color codes. In addition to educational information, the final result of transforming text into color reveals the closest named color, adding surprise and delight for users.
The app also allows you to share your colors on Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, or email. You can use Rainbow Shifter for engaging challenges: ask friends on social networks questions like "What color is your name?" and see the responses they share.
The app's creator, a Romanian who sold his first software at 19
Horațiu Tănescu has been passionate about software since high school. In fact, the idea of starting a software company came to Horațiu when he was still a senior in high school. At 19, he managed to sell the first software he created, an early version of a utility program that protected confidential data and secret internet operations.
At 20, he turned down a top offer in the United States, convinced that he could achieve the American dream right in Romania. And he did. Over the years, through his company founded in 1997 – East Tec -, he has created programs, products, applications, and websites.

The idea to create the Rainbow Shifter app came after he developed two other apps that focused on color: "While I was typing a color code, I saw the color in real time. I asked myself: I type a word, how would it transform into a color? Rainbow Shifter is simpler than the other color apps I've created, more fun, more unexpected, all in real time. The only guarantee is that each word will be a different color, allowing the user to explore millions of shades. Each keystroke brings a new surprise."
Oana Mudura, co-founder of the company, also contributed to the development of the Rainbow Shifter project. She says she loved the app created by Horatiu because it was something surprising. "For the first time, I saw language transformed into color. Basically, every word opens a new gateway to a unique shade, we can explore interesting combinations, and we can express creativity in a new way. It's not just about transforming words into colors, it also provides detailed information about associated color codes. From design, fashion, beauty, to branding or art, the potential of this algorithm is immense, so we decided to join forces to develop an app designed for anyone who wants to explore creativity through color," explained Oana.
