5G gaining great momentum amid uncertain regulation and standard - ResearchICA

The worldwide telecom industry is racing towards 5G with a series of tests and trials. While the early euphoria was limited to the USA, Japan, South Korea, and China; it’s now becoming more common (worldwide) with every week a bunch of operators, vendors, regulators, and governments joining the 5G race.

First 5G Connection on 5G Smartphone
In one of the most crucial developments, Qualcomm successfully established 5G connection on its first 5G smartphone. The 5G connection was established using 5G modem chipset for mobile devices. This is a major milestone in the development of 5G.
In another important development on 5G connection, LG U+ completed the technology verification for 4G-5G dual-connectivity in live network. The trial involved the use of two base stations at a LG U+ 5G testbed in Seoul.
David Brown, Senior Analyst at ResearchICA said, “4G-5G dual-connectivity will be highly crucial for the operators to take best out of both the networks, and it will provide a foundation for heterogeneous networks in 5G era.”
South Korea 5G Spectrum Auction
Operators from South Korea have expressed strong will to pioneer the 5G network for the commercial application. However, spectrum auction will be the most critical element in the adoption of 5G mobile networks.
South Korea is working to finalise its 5G frequency allocation plan on which the auction will be done. Under this plan, the ministry will finalise the allocation of 3.5 GHz and 28 GHz bands, which are 5G frequency candidates. South Korean government has planned to conduct the auction next year with a view to create the world’s first 5G ecosystem in the country.
Real World 5G Applications
LG U+ has completed the pre-commercial trial of ultra-high-definition (UHD) IPTV over 5G FWA with a chipset based 5G millimeter-wave CPE.
During the trial, LG U+ demonstrated UHD IPTV over 5G FWA and up to a 2Gbps capacity of Huawei’s CPE in an end-to-end 5G network. The trial also demonstrated 5G FWA service research results of both sides, as well as FWA service scenarios in advance.
The trial demonstrations have laid a solid foundation for the LG U+ 5G commercial launch and set a key milestone for the development of 5G.
