Beds nurse writes book on suicide of first husband

Write about what you know – and few know better the devastating effects of suicide than recently-retired Bedfordshire nurse, Janey Robins.
It was 13 years into her first marriage that husband, Simon, took his own life.
Following a brief career switch and eventually remarrying, the 64-year-old has now published her story, Black Confetti: My Bipolar Marriage to critical acclaim.
Her beautifully written memoirs have already attracted a lengthy string of five-star reviews from captivated readers.

Following the death of her first husband, single-parent Janey took a break from nursing to complete a degree in journalism.
It was during her studies that she discovered her natural ability for creative writing.
A tutor on a writing retreat in France provided the encouragement for Janey to begin working on memoirs from her traumatic first marriage as a way of helping others who are also suffering.
She explained: “I hope Black Confetti: My Bipolar Marriage will educate people to recognise the signs and symptoms of mania, psychosis and depression and how to seek help.
“If my story prevents just one death by suicide, then I will have achieved my goal.
“I also hope it will give comfort to those bereaved by suicide and reduce the feelings of blame, shame, and guilt that are associated with the loss of a loved one by suicide.”
Although tragedy and mental health are at the core of Black Confetti: My Polar Marriage, it is ultimately a love story.
But it also demonstrates how love can blind even the most trained eye from symptoms and behavioural patterns.
Janey’s brutally honest reflections, which are written more like a novel than a memoir, make for an absorbing read, and one that provides hope in the face of adversity.
She added: “I wanted to support and reassure those like me who have become known as survivors of bereavement by suicide to know that they are not alone and that they will recover and heal in time.”
Janey now lives in the village of Bolnhurst, on the Bedfordshire-Cambridgeshire border, with her second husband, Ben.
She did eventually return to nursing and worked with police officers suffering PTSD, anxiety and depression up to her retirement during the pandemic.
She has almost completed a sequel to Black Confetti: My Bipolar Marriage and remains undecided whether to publish the next chapter of her remarkable story.
