The competition unfolds in a multi-stage format, starting with zonal rounds held at four prestigious IITs across the nation: IIT Kharagpur (East Zone), IIT Bombay (West Zone), IIT Kanpur (North Zone), and IIT Madras (South Zone). Teams from various colleges and educational institutions converge at these zones, bringing along their custom-built RC aircraft to participate in rigorous challenges.
Problem Statement for the Zonal Rounds:
The competition's primary objective is to design and operate a commercial aircraft that maximizes payload capacity relative to its weight. Each team's aircraft must efficiently load, transport, and unload golf ball payloads, adhering to specific performance metrics. The payload transportation efficiency is crucial, with points awarded based on payload capacity and deductions made for ground time during loading and unloading.
Qualifier Round:
In the qualifier round, teams must demonstrate their aircraft's robust payload-carrying capabilities. The aircraft must sustain flight for a minimum of 30 seconds with the payload securely mounted, earning scores based on the weight of the payload carried relative to the aircraft's weight. The top 30 scoring teams advance to the main round.
Main Round:
The main round tasks each team with completing a full round trip that involves loading, transporting, unloading, reloading, and transporting golf ball payloads. Teams earn points for successfully delivering payloads and incur deductions for ground time, with the net score determining their final ranking.
Design Constraints:
Participants must adhere to stringent design constraints to ensure fair competition and safety:
• Thrust-to-Weight Ratio (T/W) must not exceed 1 without payload.
• Maximum Weight of the aircraft is 1 kg (excluding payload).
• Propeller Diameter limited to 13 inches; Wingspan restricted to 1.2 m.
• Electric Motors are the only permissible propulsion method; IC engines and others are prohibited.
• No Gyroscopes or Programming Assistance is allowed in the receivers or for mission phases.
• FPV or any flying support systems are strictly prohibited.
Rewards and Recognition:
The competition offers substantial rewards to top-performing teams, including cash prizes at both zonal and national levels. Winners of the zonal rounds receive invitations to compete in the national finals, hosted at RVCE, Bengaluru. The top three teams at the national level receive significant cash prizes, encouraging participants to strive for excellence in aeronautical engineering.
Workshops and Educational Initiatives:
