Retired Lancashire teacher’s new book on climate crisis

Retired Lancashire teacher Roger Bunyan hopes his latest book will act as a reminder of the looming climate crisis.
The 71-year-old has just published an account of his posting with his new bride, Jackie, on a remote island in the Pacific Ocean.
The couple spent two challenging, yet enjoyable, years on the Kiribati island of Beru while working for the Voluntary Service Overseas.
But The Rising Tides of Beru is much more than just a young couple’s travelogue.
He explained: “Barely in our 20s, we worked in an outer island boarding school teaching a variety of subjects to local pupils.
“Over our two years, from 1976 to 1978, both Jackie and I developed an affection for these unique islands and their inhabitants.
“The second part The Rising Tides of Beru leaps forward four decades after leaving.
“It outlines the threat that rising tides are having on the island of Beru along with the other islands of Kiribati.”
Adventurer Roger is a regular contributor to outdoor magazines with his fascinating biographical accounts of trail-blazing explorers and environmentalists such as John Muir, Nobert Casteret, Dot Butler and Fridtjof Nansen.
His debut book, Mountain Magic, from last year was also awarded a string of glowing five-star reviews by critics.
The thrilling account of his climbing adventures around the world was described as ‘a thoroughly good read’, ‘clever’ and ‘well written’.
But it is the impending climate crisis which has more recently grabbed his focus.
While severe weather has become a common indicator of global warming in the UK, across the Pacific island communities live in fear as sea levels continue to rise.
High tides are already breaching recently built flood walls that were designed to protect the coastal towns and villages.
Roger, who lives on the edge of the West Pennine Moors, added: “Of the 33 islands of this Pacific nation, only one island stands more than two or three metres above the ever rising water.
“With global warming creating higher and higher tides, what is the future for Kiribati”
