Pressbox (Press Release) - Five-star-rated Buckinghamshire novelist Geoff Price is providing proof that you’re never too old to pick up the pen.
The 80-year-old grandfather’s debut, The Search, has just been published to critical acclaim.
Reviewers have described the gripping new novel as being a ‘wonderfully warm story’, ‘a search for life and purpose’, and ‘hard to put down’.
Fellow critic Janice Mayne stated: “I felt sad when this book came to an end.”
Geoff only began writing The Search while studying for an MA in Creative Writing with the Open University.
He explained: “I wanted to do another Open University course and, as an avid reader, Creative Writing sounded interesting.
“As part of the MA we were given some clues in a character creation exercise, which is where I came up with Jack.
“We were then asked to put a disrupting incident in his life, which is where Samantha arrived at his front door.
“Until then, I had not planned or expected to write a novel.”
The Search is an authoritative study, told through the perspectives of two protagonists, into how memory can often distort the truth.
Geoff’s engaging narrative follows the fortunes of widower Jack as single mother Samantha arrives on his north London doorstep – convinced that he’s her father.
Set between 1990 and 1955, and with perfect pacing and exquisite characterisation, The Search, is a compelling and thought-provoking new novel.
Geoff, whose favourite authors include Alice Munro, Graham Greene and Julian Barnes, added: “Samantha has questions for Jack which he is unable or unwilling to answer, he’s not sure which.
“What did happen 35 years ago? What does she want?
“As he struggles to answer her persistent questions, he realised that his memory was not as reliable as he had thought.
“Has he been hiding something?”
Following the successful release of The Search, Geoff is currently working on a new novel.
Away from the keyboard, the semi-retired business advisor enjoys spending time with his family including six grandchildren and his partner’s two grandchildren, drinking draught Guinness, enjoying live music gigs and supporting Birmingham City Football Club.
