The Arab Regional Women Network on Good Local Governance (ARWN) held a meeting involving women members of the civil societies and non-governmental organizations in Iraq, who paid a special visit to Jordan recently.
The meeting aimed at exchanging ideas and coordinating efforts between the Jordanian women and their Iraqi counterparts, as part of a program conducted by the Iraqi National Democratic Institute to support women members of the civil societies in Iraq.
ARWN Director, Arwa Balqar briefed participants in the meeting on the network’s objectives and programs, both on the local and regional levels. As of Jordan, Balqar said that the network provides networking programs for its members working in the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) and the Kingdom’s municipal councils.
Such programs include “Ma’an Nata’alam” (Together We Learn) which was launched last year to provide women employees in the Kingdom with the opportunity to upgrade their competence and know-how. The network also implements a program to enhance ways of communication among members of the network.
Balqar indicated that GAM is strongly supporting the local-oriented programs, especially the ones targeting the youth, children and those with special needs.
Head of Women Affairs Program at the Iraqi National Democratic Institute, Fardous Al-Majeed has commended the role of Jordanian women on all levels, mainly in the fields of empowerment and public work. She indicated that the Iraqi delegation has met with a number of leading Jordanian women, and visited some of the prominent institutions in the Kingdom that support women affairs.
On her part, member of the Iraqi Women League, Firyal Al-Ka’bi emphasized the importance of exchanging know-how and experiences between Jordanian and Iraqi women, noting that such exchange will help Iraqi women to enhance their role in Iraq’s reconstruction process.
The meeting was also featured with side talks among the participants, regarding ways to enhance their cooperation and improve networking efforts.
