British Red Cross starts coach training for senior managers

Added: (Thu Jul 02 2009)

British Red Cross has embarked on a training programme to improve the coaching skills of its senior managers.

Executive coaches from leadership development company Unlimited Potential will work closely with nine directors to enable them to more effectively mentor and develop employees on the charity’s talent management programme.

Currently the organisation, which employs 2,500 people across the UK, has eight staff participating in the career development programme.

The coach training is part of a shift in focus in learning and development within the organisation as it looks ahead to the introduction of a new corporate strategy in 2010.

British Red Cross talent manager Jon Summerson said: “We want to ensure our senior managers have the opportunity to practice and refresh their coaching skills so they can support the organisation’s talent management programme. We want to create a culture of our leaders developing the leaders of the future.

“Improving their coaching skills will therefore form a vital part in how our organisation manages talented individuals.

“Coaching, in its simplest form, is about having a good conversation with someone to help improve performance.

“Changing how we manage people will help individuals feel more valued, empowered and creative, and ultimately ensure we retain talented employees.

“By providing refresher coach training for the senior managers, we also hope to see the beneficial affects of the coaching approach cascade down through the organisation.

“The training is also important groundwork for next year when the British Red Cross introduces a new corporate strategy."

Unlimited Potential managing director Tim Hawkes added: “During the next two months, our highly-skilled coaches will be training top level British Red Cross directors to improve their coaching abilities.

“Our executive coaches deliver bespoke sessions tailored to an individual’s and business’ needs. The outcome is that our coaching and training programmes ensure results happen quickly and stick.

“Developing a coaching-based approach encourages a more open, honest and transparent working culture that gives employees greater support and the tools to better carry out their role effectively.”
