The Top 10 Mobile Ringtones of 2001
Specialist Ringtones.co.uk charts the best-selling pop ringtones of the year
Mobile content specialist Ringtones.co.uk has revealed the year’s most popular music ringtones in its first-ever annual Top 10 sales chart.
King of the pop ringtones for 2001, with more than double the sales of the second-placed tone is Shaggy’s It Wasn’t Me. Hits from Eminem, S Club 7 and Kylie also feature in the top 10. The pop ringtones chart countdown is:
1. It Wasn’t Me: Shaggy
2. Stan: Eminem feat. Dido
3. Can’t Get You Out Of My Head: Kylie Minogue
4. Dancing In The Moonlight: Toploader
5. Do You Really Like It: DJ Pied Piper
6. Don’t Stop Moving: S Club 7
7. Big Brother (theme from): Paul Oakenfold
8. Because I Got High: Afro Man
9. Get Ur Freak On: Missy Elliot
10. Clint Eastwood: Gorillaz
Classic tones also scored heavily alongside the pop chart hits. The theme from the film and TV series Mission: Impossible beat Shaggy to the title of 2001’s overall best-selling tone by just 500 sales. Other favourites such as the Great Escape and Italian Job theme were also popular.
Ringtones.co.uk has supplied ringtones and logos to over 1.2 million mobile phones in 2001. Mobile users make their choice of ringtone or logo from Ringtones.co.uk’s website, or by dialing a special number, and the choice is delivered to their phone by SMS message, for around £2 per item.
Ringtones.co.uk director Andy Mills commented: “This chart rounds off an incredible year for us. We’re looking forward to making next year’s hits available to our customers – as well as some more old favourites.”
Positions 11 to 20 in the 2001 ringtones chart are:
11. Bootilicious: Destiny’s Child
12. Hey Baby: DJ Otzi
13. Perfect Gentleman: Wyclef Jean
14. Smooth Criminal: Alien Ant Farm
15. Insomnia: Faithless
16. Purple Hills: D12 & Eminem
17. Angel: Shaggy
18. Castles In The Sky: Ian van Dahl
19. 21 Seconds: So Solid Crew
20. Let Me Blow Ya Mind: Eve
Surveys reveal nearly 60% of mobile phone owners in England prefer to have custom ringtones, and 60% of these change their ringtone on a regular basis. And mobile phone industry sources say teenagers believe having an icon on their phone highlights their personality.
Ringtones.co.uk was founded last year to supply mobile content including ringtones, logos and messaging services to individuals, and also to businesses for sale to their respective users. The company is riding high in a business sector which is estimated to be worth over £30 million in Britain alone this year, and £700 million worldwide. Ringtones.co.uk expects to deliver content to over 2 million handsets by April 2002.
