“Sing for Amman” Competition Qualifying Final Next Thursday

Added: (Tue Jun 30 2009)

The committee for the “Sing for Amman” competition which was launched by the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) for amateur singers on its radio station, Hawa Amman, will announce next Thursday the short-listed participants who have qualified for the final phase, during a concert held at Al Hussein Cultural Center Theater.

Sixteen participants were selected by the committee out of 157 initial participants who were chosen by a panel of judges that included the Director of Hawa Amman, Noufal Al Khasawneh, musicians Fakher Hattar and Macadi Nahhas, and the Head of the Music Department at Jordan Radio and Television, Dhargham Bushnaq.

Al Khasawneh explained that each participant is given a random number for judging transparency and credibility; each participant is categorized into 6 phases, and, during each meeting, a number of contestants are eliminated (those who do not meet the competition’s criteria: a beautiful voice and original words and melody).

He indicated that the 16 participants nominated for the qualifying final at a large public festivity at Al Hussein Cultural Center Theater next Thursday, and GAM would install a number of display screens throughout the outer squares of the Center, all to be aired by a number of radio and television stations; the event is also to be open to the public.
Al Khasawneh stated that the committee would evaluate the participants during the event and give them partial final scores, after which the door would be opened for the public’s votes through SMS (at nominal fees), until Thursday afternoon, June 18, when the first 3 winners will be announced in a large celebration.

The Director of Hawa Amman pointed out that GAM would give the winners a cash prize and record the three winning songs in the best studios, in the company of the biggest musical bands, and that the winners would participate in this year’s Amman Summer Festival at more than one location.

It is worth noting that GAM launched the “Sing for Amman” competition under the slogan “if you’ve got a good voice and love Amman, Sing for Amman”, on June 1, 2009, with the aim of encouraging and motivating Jordanian singers and amateurs to write a special song for their Capital, a song that is unique in both words and melody and expresses the past, present, and future of the City.
