Slippery Moss Could Be A Major Hazard For Elderly Residents This Winter

Added: (Mon Nov 02 2009)

Our increasingly mild and damp winters encourage the growth of slippery moss and algae on residential paths, patios and driveways, making the ground slippery and a hazard for residents, particularly the elderly.

Dampness combined with heavy shade and poor air circulation are the key ingredients that form moss and algae, and the do-it-yourself method for its successful removal, involving rigorous scrubbing and the use of chemicals, not only produces minimum results, but will only prolong the moss growth problem and is not recommended to residents.

Hailsham Town Council is concerned that the slippery surfaces could cause injury and provides a moss removal service to private residences to counter this slip hazard problem quickly and effectively. Work can be carried out by their professional team at preferential rates to residential customers.

Richard Gillett, Works Supervisor at Hailsham Town Council, said:

“There are certain times of the year when safety problems in the garden are more prolific, these being generally the wetter months from October to March. During this period, moss can grow on patios, steps and driveways causing dangerously slippery surfaces. If left untreated, not only will moss growths make your house look dirty, but it will be easy for people to slip and fall, particularly the elderly.”

He added: “Since moss is easier to remove in the early stages of its growth, beginning with the middle of autumn, its immediate removal may be the best approach to safeguard yourself against injury.”

Hailsham Town Council also offers free site survey and demonstrations when requested, allowing them to give an accurate risk assessment of residents’ gardens and pathway surfaces.

If you would like further information about the slippery moss removal services available, contact Richard Gillett on 01323 841702 (during office hours).
