Acomplia- The Two In One Miracle

Added: (Thu Aug 31 2006)

An obese is often the butt of jokes. If you are an obese you must have noticed people laughing at you. Worse than the embarrassment is the disease that comes with obesity. Obesity never comes alone; it brings numerous diseases like heart trouble, kidney failure, prostate cancer, arthritis along with it. Other than hereditary transmission, the root cause of obesity is taking excessive food without doing balanced amount of physical work.

Moreover, modern machineries have reduced physical workload on human beings. More food and less physical work prepare a perfect ground for obesity to grow. Obesity has become a dangerous disease. Obesity happens when a person consumes more calories than he/she burns. Reasons for this imbalance include genetic, environmental, psychological, and other factors.

Diet pills are being used by millions of people who want to lose weight and they are getting more and more popular every day. The pharmaceutical companies are doing a booming business in diet pills. But are these diet pills safe? The answer is yes- but then it all depends on the behavior and use patterns of the person taking the pills.
Most diet drugs companies are trying to invent genuine solutions to the problems of overweight and obesity. They have tried amphetamine-type diet pills, now they are producing diet pills that work on the brain to suppress appetite, or in the gut to inhibit the amount of fat (and calories) digested. After the success of prescription diet pill brands like: Meridia (Sibutramine), Xenical (Orlistat), Adipex, Bontril, Didrex, Phentermine and Tenuate we now have ACOMPLIA. Developed by Sanofi-Aventis, Acomplia (rimonabant) is a selective Endocannabinoid receptor antagonist indicated for the treatment of obesity. The drug also has potential as a treatment for smoking cessation because the Endocannabinoid system is involved in the body's response to tobacco dependence.

Acomplia is a recent entrant into the diet pill market in Europe (approval for sale in U.S yet to be given ) .Although it has received positive response it is too early to predict its success. The market for weight-reducing drugs has had a somewhat chequered history, characterized by major product withdrawals. Although the statistics suggest a market with enormous opportunity, pharmaceutical companies have so far been unable to capitalise on the need for anti obesity agents.
Only two drugs are approved for long-treatment of obesity. They are the lipase inhibitor orlistat, the leading medicine for weight reduction, and sibutramine. Use of both products has been limited by side effects.

In the prevailing market there is a clear opportunity for an effective and well-tolerated anti-obesity drug.
