CHARITY FIGHTING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE WINS INTERNATIONAL AWARD

Added: (Thu Feb 28 2002)

London, 28 February 2002 - A St Helen’s charity dedicated to supporting women and families suffering domestic violence will be one of only ten UK charities to be awarded £25,000 at the GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) International IMPACT Awards Ceremony held in London on 28 February 2002.

The St Helen’s District Women’s Aid (SHWDA) is an unusual charity because it provides a holistic service to the whole family and the community. Throughout last year 145 women and 161 children were accommodated within the refuge, which began 28 years ago in a two up two down Council property. SHDWA now has four sites in the area, including a 24 hour domestic violence help line, two refuges, a drop-in advice, advocacy and information service and a training centre which holds a children and parent therapy group, a self help group, pre-employment training for women and a service for male perpetrators of domestic violence. 1272 contracts were made at the drop-in-centre for information and support throughout 2000/2001.

Eileen Taylor, Director of SHDWA says: ”It has been mind-blowing winning the award, it will help to raise our profile and the work we do in the Community. It is great that our work has been acknowledged. Because all our work is confidential and client led and our energies go into our services, it has in turn made it very difficult to give priority to the promotion of our services. The award will give SHDWA a fantastic cash boost and will enable us to inform the public of our services and the impact we have on the community as a whole.”

The International IMPACT Awards, now in their fifth year, are run by GSK in partnership with the King’s Fund, a leading independent health charity. The awards reward small-to medium-sized registered charities with a proven track record in community health care. Nine other UK charities receive £25,000 while ten highly commended projects receive £1000. The scheme is running
concurrently with a sister initiative in Philadelphia, USA, which is the US headquarters of GlaxoSmithKline.

Claire Hitchcock, Director, Global Community Partnership, Europe and International, GlaxoSmithKline comments: “We are delighted to support the outstanding work undertaken by these community based UK healthcare charities. The charities have demonstrated that despite the constraints of their size they can make a dramatic difference to those in need within their community.”
