Freshen your Breath for Valentine's Day with Advice from the British Dental Health Foundation
Britains leading oral health education charity has offered advice on how to make sure Britain’s lovers mouths are in shape get up close and personal on Valentines Day.
A simple lick and sniff test can be carried out to find if you have bad breath. Simply lick the inside of your wrist and leave it to dry for a few seconds. Then sniff it. You will soon know if you have a problem.
Bad breath can be caused by a number of factors and if you neglect your regular oral hygiene habits this can make the problem worse. Bad breath can also be caused by nasal or stomach conditions.
Preventing bad breath and gum disease is easy. Follow these simple advice tips and let your tongue do the talking.
Brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste
Cut down on how often you have sugary snacks and drinks
Floss your teeth – without it you can miss up to 40 per cent of tooth surfaces
Use a mouthwash – as some contain antibacterial agents
Chew sugar - free gum – this will stop your mouth drying out. And a dry mouth can lead to bad breath.
Visit you dentist regularly. A dentist or hygienist will advise you on how to keep your breath fresh and gums healthy.
A free leaflet on bad breath is available from the Word of Mouth consumer service run by the BDHF.
Qualified dental staff can provide independent and impartial advice on all aspects of oral health on 0870 333 1188 from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm or online at www.wordofmouth.org.uk
