Wales recognises International Development Innovator as a “Green Hero”
Welsh social entrepreneur Cathryn Al Kanaan has been awarded a Green Hero Award for her contribution to sustainable development in Wales. The Pembroke Dock born and based international development specialist has been picking up accolades with the not for profit company she set up in 2004- Sazani Associates. One of her projects recently became the first UK education based project to be recognised and included in the UNESCO good practice guide. Originally an ergonomist with masters in International Development from Swansea, Cathryn has lived and worked in Africa for many years working initially as a cheese maker in Tanzania before developing and working in a number of private sector food based businesses then moving into the social development field. Sazani Associates currently has offices in Tanzania and Belize.
Food is a passion for Cathryn.
“Food is the basis for life and its production underpins the realities of global sustainable development. I believe that food sovereignty and the social justice agenda it encompasses is as relevant to Wales as it is to any African country”
“Rural livelihoods and the reality of farming should not be divorced from the food that we eat. In some senses Wales has a great deal to learn from parts of the South (Developing World)”
