Added: (Tue May 22 2001)
A new web browser, www.buzzlondon.com from local5media is providing a fresh angle on the infamous Jack the Ripper murders of the late 19th Century. A virtual tour of the serial killer’s territory explores the mile-wide area of London’s East End where the murders took place. This and other themed tours are brought to life by a combination of web cams, aerial images, street maps, interactive content and 360 degree views, providing a comprehensive information gateway for London’s residents and tourists.
Over the last hundred years, thousands of pages of text, as well as several films and TV dramas, have been produced on the Ripper, who was never caught. BuzzLondon provides views of the exact locations, such as White’s Row, formerly Buck’s Row, where the first victim, Mary Ann Nichols was savagely murdered on 31 August 1888 and Hanbury Street, where Annie Chapman met a similar fate only a week later.
BuzzLondon offers not just the nostalgic but also the practical. Since its launch at the beginning of the year, visitors have been accessing it in their tens of thousands to find practical information as well as explore every business, address and street of every Borough in Greater London. Information is also available on events, sports, restaurants, travel, community services, hotels, pubs, leisure and entertainment via links to hundreds of web sites on every aspect of life in the capital. This includes on-line theatre and restaurant booking throughout London.
The integrated visual imagery is also available to suppliers of tourist services, putting them in touch with their customers and promoting businesses in all areas of London.
For media organisations, the technology enables geographic and time specific advertising, as well as location specific news and services delivery. local5media combines visual technologies, including aerial photography and web cams, sound streaming, geographic information technology with high quality mapping, geographically targeted advertising and broadband local channel content. The system meets digital television broadcast requirements and is WAP-enabled to provide navigational instructions.
Tim Wood, Managing Director of local5media, comments, “BuzzLondon is the first of a new generation of leisure portals. It explores every square centimetre of Greater London and is the ideal way for businesses to invite London’s visitors to ‘come and see us’.” More details are at www.local5media.com.
